Appliance Disposal in Airdrie & Calgary: What We Take

July 12, 2026 · 4 min read

If you've got an old fridge sitting in the garage, a broken washing machine in the basement, or a stove that finally gave up mid-Thanksgiving dinner, you're probably wondering the same thing: who actually takes these things, and what's it going to cost?

I'm TJ. I run TJ's Junk Removal in Airdrie, and we cover Calgary too. We haul away old appliances every single week. Some are dead, some just got swapped out for an upgrade, and a few are still working but nobody wants them. Whatever the case, here's what you need to know about getting rid of them the right way.

Which Appliances We Can Haul (and Which We Can't)

We take just about any household appliance you can name. Here's the short list:

  • Refrigerators and freezers (any size)
  • Stoves, ovens, and ranges
  • Dishwashers
  • Washers and dryers
  • Microwaves (built-in or countertop)
  • Chest freezers
  • Window air conditioners and portable AC units
  • Dehumidifiers
  • Water coolers
  • Small kitchen appliances (if you're clearing out a whole kitchen)

There are two items we cannot take, and I want to be straight with you about them upfront:

  1. Built-in wall ovens that are hardwired into the house — if it's not unplugged and free-standing, you'll need an electrician to disconnect it first. After that, we can take it.
  2. Commercial-grade restaurant appliances — those are a different beast entirely, and we don't have the setup to handle them safely.

Everything else? We load it, we haul it, we dispose of it.

What About Freon and Refrigerants?

This is the big one. If you're getting rid of a fridge, freezer, or air conditioner, those units contain refrigerant (commonly called Freon). Under Alberta law, that stuff has to be recovered by a certified technician before the unit can be scrapped or recycled.

Some dumpster rental companies will let you toss a fridge in the bin and figure it out later. That's not legal, and it's not something we do.

We work with a licensed refrigerant recovery service in Calgary. When we pick up your old fridge, we take it straight to a facility where the Freon is drained and captured properly. The metal gets recycled, and the hazardous material gets handled the way it's supposed to be. You don't have to do anything on your end — just make sure the fridge is unplugged and cleared out.

How Much Does Appliance Disposal Cost?

I'll give you real numbers based on what we see most often.

For a single standard appliance — a washing machine, a stove, a dishwasher — you're looking at roughly $60 to $90 for pickup and hauling. That includes our time to come to your house, load it, and dispose of it properly.

For a fridge or freezer, the price is closer to $90 to $130 because of the refrigerant handling fee. That fee isn't us padding the bill — it's what we pay the certified recovery guys.

If you have multiple appliances (say you're redoing a kitchen and have a stove, dishwasher, and fridge to go), the per-unit price drops. We bundle the load, so you might pay around $150 to $200 for three appliances in one trip.

We charge by the truckload, not by the pound. If you've got other junk to go along with the appliances — old shelving, boxes, a broken table — throw it in the pile. It doesn't cost extra as long as it fits in the same load.

A Note on Appliances That Still Work

If your old appliance works but you just upgraded, you have options. You can try selling it on Facebook Marketplace or Kijiji. People will buy a used fridge for a garage or a basement suite. You can also donate to a charity like the Mustard Seed or the Women's Centre of Calgary if the unit is in decent shape.

But here's the thing I see all the time: people list a working appliance online, get a dozen messages, deal with three no-shows, and eventually shove it in the garage out of frustration. If that sounds like your situation, just call us. We'll haul it. Even working appliances need to go somewhere, and we make sure they get to a recycling centre or a second-hand outlet where they actually get used.

How to Book a Pickup in Airdrie or Calgary

It's pretty simple. Give us a call or book online. Tell us what you've got — make, model, how many units, and whether they're in a basement, garage, or on the curb. We'll give you a firm price over the phone or by text. No surprises when we show up.

We service all of Airdrie, and we cover Calgary from the north end down to about Glenmore Trail. If you're outside that range, ask anyway — we've made exceptions plenty of times.

We show up in our truck, we load everything ourselves, we sweep up the area, and we leave. You don't lift a finger.

If you're ready to get that old appliance out of your way, give us a call or head to our website to book a time that works for you.
