How to Get Rid of a Mattress in Airdrie & Calgary
If you've got an old mattress taking up space in your basement, garage, or spare bedroom, you already know it's not something you can just toss in the alley and hope for the best. In Airdrie and Calgary, mattresses are a headache because they don't fit in standard garbage bins, and the rules around disposal are stricter than most people realize. I've been running TJ's Junk Removal for years, and mattress disposal is one of the most common calls we get — so let me lay out your options clearly.
Why You Can't Just Leave a Mattress at the Curb
Both Airdrie and Calgary have bylaws against putting large items like mattresses out with regular household waste. If you leave a mattress on the curb without a proper pickup arrangement, you're looking at a fine — and honestly, even if nobody tickets you, it's a lousy thing to do to your neighbours. Mattresses soak up rain and snow, become a magnet for pests, and nobody wants to look at someone else's stained bed frame on garbage day.
Calgary's waste bylaws are clear: bulky items require a booked pickup or a trip to the landfill. Airdrie's rules are similar. So you need a plan.
Option 1: City Bulk Pickup (If You Can Wait)
If you're on city waste collection, both Calgary and Airdrie offer bulk pickup services for large items, including mattresses.
Calgary: You can book a bulk pickup through 311 or online. You're allowed up to three items per pickup, and you get two pickups per calendar year at no extra charge. The catch? Wait times can stretch a couple of weeks or more depending on the season. You also need to make sure the mattress is at the curb by 7 a.m. on pickup day, and it can't be wrapped in plastic or covered in hazardous material.
Airdrie: Airdrie offers a similar service. You book a bulky item pickup through the city, and they'll come grab it from your curb. Again, you're limited on how many pickups you get per year, and you're on their schedule.
This option works fine if you're not in a hurry and you don't mind hauling the mattress to the curb yourself. But if the mattress is heavy, awkward, or upstairs — or if you need it gone today — this probably isn't your best bet.
Option 2: Drop It Off at the Landfill Yourself
If you have a truck or a big enough vehicle, you can take the mattress to the landfill yourself.
Calgary Landfill (Spyhill or Shepard): Mattresses cost around $15–$20 to drop off, but you also pay a scale fee based on the weight of your total load. If you're just bringing one mattress, it's manageable. If you're hauling a truckload of junk, it adds up.
Airdrie Landfill (Eastside): Airdrie's landfill accepts mattresses as well. Fees are similar — a small gate fee plus disposal. Check hours before you go, because they close earlier than you'd expect, especially on weekends.
The downside here is obvious: you need a vehicle big enough to transport a mattress without it flapping out the back, and you need to be comfortable lifting it in and out. If you've got a bad back or a small car, this option is out.
Option 3: Retailer Take-Back Programs
If you're buying a new mattress, ask the store if they'll haul the old one away. Most mattress retailers in Calgary and Airdrie — places like Sleep Country, The Brick, and even some local shops — offer removal of your old mattress when they deliver the new one. There's usually a small fee (around $20–$30), but it's worth it for the convenience.
The catch: you have to be buying a new mattress from them. If you're just trying to get rid of an old one and not replacing it, this won't work.
Option 4: Call a Junk Removal Company (This Is What We Do)
This is where TJ's Junk Removal comes in. We'll come to your house, haul the mattress out of whatever room it's in — basement, second-floor bedroom, wherever — load it into our truck, and take it to the proper disposal facility. We handle the lifting, the driving, the fees, and the cleanup.
We serve both Airdrie and Calgary, and we can usually get to you within a day or two. We also recycle what we can. Mattresses are tough to recycle because of the mixed materials (foam, steel springs, fabric), but we work with facilities that strip them down when possible, keeping metal and foam out of the landfill.
Pricing is straightforward. We charge by how much space your stuff takes up in our truck. A single mattress plus box spring is usually a partial load, so you're not paying for a full truck. We'll give you a price upfront, no surprises.
This option makes the most sense if:
- You can't lift or carry the mattress yourself
- You don't have a suitable vehicle
- You need it gone today or this week
- You have more than just a mattress to get rid of (old furniture, boxes, etc.)
- You just don't want to deal with the hassle
What About Recycling and Donation?
Donating a used mattress is harder than it used to be. Most charities — including the Salvation Army, Goodwill, and the Mustard Seed — will not accept mattresses unless they're in near-perfect condition with no stains, tears, or odours. And even then, many have stopped taking them altogether due to bed bug concerns.
If your mattress is genuinely clean and less than a few years old, you could try listing it for free on Kijiji or Facebook Marketplace. People will take almost anything if it's free. But be honest about the condition. Don't offload a stained, sagging mattress on some unsuspecting person just to save yourself the disposal fee.
For recycling, there are a few private recyclers in Calgary that accept mattresses for a fee. They break them down and divert most of the materials from the landfill. It's a better option for the environment, but it costs more and you still have to get the mattress there yourself.
Which Option Should You Pick?
Honestly, it depends on your situation. If you have a truck, a free Saturday morning, and the physical ability to haul a mattress, the landfill is your cheapest route. If you're on city waste collection and can wait a couple weeks, book a bulk pickup. If you're buying a new bed, pay the store to take the old one.
But if you're like most of the people who call me — busy, not interested in lifting a heavy mattress up a flight of stairs, and just want it gone — give us a shout. We'll handle everything, and you won't have to think about it again.
If you're in Airdrie or Calgary and need a mattress (or anything else) hauled away, call or text TJ's Junk Removal and we'll get you on the schedule.
