Old Shed or Deck Removal in Airdrie & Calgary: What to Know

July 12, 2026 · 5 min read

If you've got a rotting wooden shed in the back corner of your Airdrie lot, or a deck in Calgary that's past its prime, you're probably staring at it wondering how the heck to get rid of it. I get it. I run TJ's Junk Removal, and we get calls about this almost every week. You can't just throw a 10x12 shed in your black bin. So let me walk you through exactly how this works, what it costs, and what you need to think about before you call anyone.

Can You Really Just Have a Shed or Deck Hauled Away?

Short answer: yes, but there are some limits. If the structure is already collapsed, in pieces, or you've taken it down yourself, we can load it up and haul it off, no problem. If it's still standing, you'll need to handle the demolition yourself or hire someone for that part. Most junk removal companies—us included—don't do structural demolition. We're haulers, not wrecking crews. But we can absolutely take the debris, the old lumber, the roofing material, the nails, and the mess once it's down.

For decks, same story. If you've pulled the boards off and the frame is exposed, we can take it. If the whole thing is still standing and solid, you'll want to call a handyman or a demo crew first.

What We Can Take (and What We Can't)

This is where people get tripped up. Here's the honest breakdown for Airdrie and Calgary customers:

We can take:

  • Treated lumber, plywood, OSB, fencing
  • Roofing shingles and tar paper (in reasonable amounts)
  • Nails, screws, hardware mixed in with the wood
  • Concrete blocks or paver stones (small to moderate amounts)
  • Old gazebos, play structures, dog runs
  • Mixed construction debris from the tear-down

We cannot take:

  • Asbestos siding or roofing (we will refuse this on sight)
  • Paint cans, stain cans, or chemical containers
  • Full trees or large stumps (we do junk removal, not tree service)
  • Hazardous materials like treated railroad ties in some cases (call us first)

If you're unsure, just send us a photo. I'd rather tell you over the phone or text than have you waste your time waiting for a truck that can't take the load.

How Much Does Shed or Deck Removal Cost in Airdrie & Calgary?

This is the part everyone wants to know, and I'll be straight with you: we price by how much space your junk takes up in the truck. We don't do flat rates for structures because a 6x8 garden shed and a 20-foot two-story deck are two completely different jobs.

For a typical small to medium shed (8x10 or smaller), once it's torn down and stacked, you're usually looking at a load that fills about a quarter to a third of our truck. That runs somewhere in the $150 to $300 range, depending on how heavy and dense the material is. A full-size deck tear-off with railings, stairs, and framing can easily fill half the truck or more, and those jobs usually land between $300 and $550.

We include labour, loading, hauling, and disposal in that price. What you see quoted is what you pay. No hidden dump fees, no "oh, that's extra" surprises.

One thing to keep in mind: if your shed has a concrete floor or a thick gravel base, that adds weight. Concrete is heavy, and disposal costs more because the dump charges by weight. We'll factor that in when we quote you.

Should You Tear It Down Yourself or Hire Someone?

I'm not going to upsell you here. If you're handy and have a weekend, you can absolutely tear down a small shed with a crowbar, a hammer, and a truckload of patience. A lot of our customers do exactly that. They pull it apart, stack the wood in a pile, and call us to haul it away. That saves you money because our crew spends less time on site.

But if you're not comfortable with a pry bar and a reciprocating saw, or if the structure is large and built well, hiring a demo crew first is money well spent. We work with a few local guys in Airdrie and Calgary who do that kind of work. I can give you a name if you ask.

A Few Practical Tips Before You Call

  • Check if there's power running to the shed. If there's electricity, you'll need an electrician to disconnect it before anyone touches the structure.
  • Keep the wood separate from other junk. If you've got old furniture or garbage mixed in, that's fine, but if you can pile the demolition debris together, our crew can load it faster, and that saves you money.
  • Know your property access. Can our truck get to the pile? If the shed is behind a fence with a narrow gate, we might need to hand-carry everything out. That's doable, but it takes longer and may affect the price.
  • Watch for nails. Seriously. We wear steel-toed boots and gloves, but if you're doing the tear-down yourself, get a magnetic sweeper. Your future self and your tires will thank you.

Why Local Matters for This Job

Airdrie and Calgary both have different dump rules and fees. We deal with them every day. We know which transfer stations take treated lumber and which ones don't. We know the weight limits and the sorting requirements. A crew from out of town might not, and that can mean extra charges or rejected loads. We've been serving this area for years. It's our backyard.

If you've got an old structure you want gone, give us a call or text. We'll ask you a few questions, give you a straight price, and get you on the schedule. No pressure, no runaround.
