The Calgary garage problem
Every garage in this city tells the same story — and it's not about the car. Between the Chinook winds blowing in, the -30 stretches in January, and the fact that most Calgary homes have attached garages that double as the mudroom, the storage room, and the workshop, it doesn't take long before the garage is full and the car's parked outside.
I've cleaned out garages in every corner of this city — from the older bungalow garages in Forest Lawn and Marlborough that haven't been touched since the 90s, to the oversized triple-car garages in Aspen Woods and Tuscany that somehow still fill up. The pattern's always the same: a few bins of Christmas decorations, a workbench nobody's used since the renovation, a stack of old tires, and a couple of lawnmowers that ran "fine last fall."
What actually ends up in a Calgary garage
Because Calgary winters are long and real, the stuff people store here is specific. I haul out a lot of:
- Winter gear nobody uses anymore — old snowblowers, extra sleds, ski boots from the 80s, and ice scrapers by the dozen
- Camping and RV gear — coolers, tents, propane tanks, and fishing rods that haven't seen a lake since before the flood of 2013
- Construction leftovers — drywall scraps, lumber off-cuts, and buckets of paint from that basement reno that wrapped up in 2009
- Old appliances and electronics — fridges that stopped cooling, CRT televisions, and desktop towers that still have a CD drive
- Tires and car parts — especially in the northeast where people hold onto rims and snow tires out of habit
The good news: I recycle and donate where I can. Scrap metal goes to a local yard, usable tools and furniture get donated if they're in decent shape, and the rest goes to the right Calgary landfill site — not dumped in an alley or left for the city to deal with.
How a cleanout works in Calgary
Here's the honest version of how the job goes. I show up at your house — anywhere in Calgary, from the deep south in Somerset to the far north in Panorama Hills — with a truck and a crew. We walk through the garage together, you point at what stays and what goes, and we load it all out. Most single-car garages take about an hour. Double and triple garages take longer, especially if there's a workbench involved.
One thing that comes up a lot in Calgary: condo and townhouse garages. A lot of people in the inner city — Inglewood, Bridgeland, Killarney — have underground parkade stalls or tiny single-car garages with limited access. I've done plenty of those. If your garage is tight to get a truck into, just say so when you call. I've worked around the back lanes of Crescent Heights and the tight parkades in the Beltline, and I'll figure out the access before I quote you anything.
What it costs and what affects the price
I don't do per-pound pricing games. I give you a flat quote before we start, and that's what you pay. The price depends on three things:
- How full the garage is — a half-empty garage with a few bins is a different job than a packed-to-the-rafters double garage
- What's in it — old appliances and electronics cost more to dispose of properly than cardboard boxes and lumber
- Access — if I can back a truck right up to the garage door, that's faster and cheaper than hauling everything down a flight of stairs or through a narrow parkade
Most Calgary garage cleanouts land between $150 and $500, depending on how much truck space you fill. If you've got a full triple garage with appliances and a workbench, it'll be higher — and any extra-fee items like fridges or long carries are in the quote up front. But you'll get the number before I start, and the truck's loaded before I ask for a cent.
Ready to get your garage back?
If you're in Calgary and your garage has become a storage unit you pay a mortgage on, call or text me at (825) 559-2766. Tell me what neighbourhood you're in and roughly what's in the garage, and I'll give you a straight answer on price and timing.
