Construction debris removal is the part of the job nobody plans for, but it's the part that keeps a project moving. That's where we come in.

How construction debris removal works in Calgary

For most Calgary reno jobs, we're talking about drywall scraps, studs, trim, old carpet, tile, and whatever else came out of the walls. What Calgary homeowners actually need

A lot of our calls come from people finishing basement suites. Calgary's been building laneway and secondary suites for years now, and those projects generate a serious amount of waste — framing lumber, insulation, vapour barrier, and drywall dust everywhere. If you're finishing a basement under a permit, you need the site clean before the inspection. We've hauled debris out of half-finished basements in Killarney, Montgomery, and Lake Bonavista more times than I can count.

The other big one is concrete. Calgary's older neighbourhoods — places like Bowness, Forest Lawn, and Marlborough — have plenty of homes with crumbling garage slabs, old walkways, and patios that need to come out. Concrete is heavy and it can't go in a regular bin. We take it to an approved recycling facility where it gets crushed and reused as aggregate. That keeps it out of the landfill and it's the right way to handle it in this city.

What it costs and what affects the price

I'll be straight with you: I can't give you a flat number over the phone because the price depends on how much debris you have and what it is. What I can tell you is the factors that move the price up or down.

Volume is the biggest one. A truckload of light material — drywall, wood, cardboard — is cheaper than the same space filled with concrete or shingles, because heavy loads cost more to dispose of at the facility. Access matters too. If you're in a walk-up condo in Mission or a house on a steep hill in Scarboro, the crew's going to work harder to get the debris out, and that's reflected in the quote.

Why Calgary crews do it differently

Calgary's got some quirks that affect this work. The freeze-thaw cycle means concrete work is seasonal — most of it happens between May and October, so that's when the concrete hauling demand peaks. The hail storms we get most summers mean roofing tear-offs spike in July and August. And the city's recycling rules are stricter than some other places, so we make sure materials go to the right facility — recyclable wood and metal get separated, and only actual garbage goes to the landfill at Spy Hill or Shepard.
