I'm TJ. I run a small junk removal crew that pulls hot tubs out of Calgary properties every week. How the job actually works here

Calgary hot tub removal has its own quirks. Here's what we deal with on the regular:

• Frozen ground and frost heave. Concrete pads shift over Calgary winters. Most tubs sit on the pad, but if yours has sunk or tilted, we work around it. We don't drag anything across your lawn when it's soft in spring — we lay down plywood or use wheeled dollies to protect the grass.
• Alley access. Most Calgary communities have back lanes, but not all. In older areas like Killarney, Bankview, or Crescent Heights, the alley can be tight, and we may need to come through the front or side gate. We measure before we quote, so there are no surprises.
• Deck and basement installs. Plenty of Calgarians put tubs on elevated decks or in walkout basements. Those need a full teardown and careful removal piece by piece. We cut the shell into sections and carry it out — no crane, no damage to the home.
• The old two-person tubs. A lot of the tubs we remove are 20-plus years old, heavy fibreglass units that weigh 700 to 1,000 pounds empty. We come with a crew, not one guy and a pickup. That's honestly the difference between a job done right and a wrecked fence.

What we handle and what we don't

We take the whole thing — the tub, the cover, the steps, the old filter and pump if you want them gone. We also haul out the surrounding deck boards and framing if you're tearing the whole structure down. What we don't do is disconnect the electrical or the plumbing. You'll need a licensed electrician and a plumber to disconnect the 240-volt feed and the supply lines before we show up. Most people in Calgary get that sorted in a day, and we coordinate around it.

We're licensed and insured, and we follow the City of Calgary's waste rules. Hot tub shells don't go in your black cart, and we make sure everything we haul ends up at a proper disposal or recycling facility — not dumped in a ravine or a farmer's field out by Airdrie.

What it costs

Pricing depends on three things: size, location, and access.

• We cut the tub into sections and you pay for the space it fills in the truck: most tubs land between the half-truck rate of $250 and the full-truck rate of $500, labour and disposal included.
• A tub on a deck or in a basement means a long carry or stairs, which carries a small extra fee — it's included in the quote up front.
• If we need extra hands or extra trips, that's factored into the quote up front — no hidden fees, no surprise charges on the invoice.
